Where Bali Actually Builds: Yard Locations From Benoa to Celukan Bawang

Updated: August 2026

Bali’s boat building is concentrated in four places: the working waterfront around Benoa harbour, the slipways of Serangan island, smaller fit-out and joinery workshops inland of Sanur and Denpasar, and — for owners who want space and deep water on the quiet north coast — the area around Celukan Bawang. Each location suits a different stage of a build, and most serious projects touch more than one of them.

Benoa: the island’s working waterfront

Benoa is where most build programmes are anchored, for a simple reason: it is the only harbour on the island that combines cargo access, marine suppliers, fuel, and a concentration of skilled trades within a few kilometres of the international airport. Engines, resin drums, rigging and electronics arrive here by container, and the same waterfront hosts the chandlers and workshops that keep a project supplied week to week.

The yards along Benoa’s south-eastern shore handle steel and fiberglass work, engine installation and final commissioning. Space is the constraint — waterfront frontage is tight, and larger hulls are often staged elsewhere and brought to Benoa for systems and finishing. If your project needs frequent supplier visits and easy owner access, Benoa is the default answer, and it is where our own shipyard operations are coordinated.

Serangan: slipways and hull work

Across the mangrove channel, Serangan island has developed into Bali’s slipway district. The reclaimed flats give room for hardstanding that Benoa cannot offer, and several operations there can haul, block and store hulls in the 15–30 metre range. Timber hulls arriving from other islands are commonly beached or slipped at Serangan for survey and recaulking before fit-out begins.

Serangan’s advantage is space and tolerance for messy work — grinding, fairing, antifouling and structural repair happen here without the congestion of the main harbour. Its limitation is draft: approach channels are shallow at spring lows, and skippers plan arrivals around the tide. For owners comparing options, we cover the haul-out and refit side of the island in our Bali refit guide.

Sanur and the inland workshops

Not everything that goes into a Bali-built boat is made on the water. The joinery studios, stainless fabricators, upholstery houses and carving workshops that give island builds their character sit inland, scattered between Sanur, Denpasar and the furniture districts further north. A galley, a saloon table or a carved bulkhead panel will usually be built in one of these workshops, trial-fitted, then trucked to the yard.

This split — hull on the waterfront, craft in the hinterland — is one of the reasons Bali punches above its weight in finish quality. The island’s furniture and villa-building economy trained thousands of joiners in teak and hardwood work, and the best of them move comfortably between a villa contract and a yacht interior. A capable build partner manages this network so the owner never has to.

Celukan Bawang: the north-coast option

On the north coast, roughly four hours’ drive from Denpasar, Celukan Bawang offers what the south cannot: a deep-water port with room around it and far less pressure on land. Larger steel and timber projects, and work that benefits from cheaper long-term hardstanding, sometimes stage here. The trade-off is distance from suppliers and from the skilled-labour pool of the south, which adds freight and travel time to every working week.

In practice, Celukan Bawang suits patient projects with a strong site manager — a hull that needs a year of structural work before its systems phase, for example — while the finishing months almost always migrate south to Benoa. The island’s build geography is a relay, not a single address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bali location is best for a full custom build?

Most full builds are coordinated from Benoa because supply, trades and owner access are strongest there, with hull staging at Serangan or the north coast when more space is needed. The right split depends on hull material, size and schedule.

Can large yachts be hauled out in Bali?

Yes, within limits. Serangan’s slipways handle most hulls up to around 30 metres, subject to weight and tide. Very large or deep-draft vessels are usually scheduled for haul-out elsewhere and come to Bali for afloat work and fit-out.

Is the north coast cheaper for building?

Land and hardstanding cost less around Celukan Bawang, but freight, travel and supervision overheads claw back much of the saving. It pays off mainly for long structural phases that need space more than speed.

Do builds move between locations during a project?

Very often. A typical sequence is structural work where space is plentiful, systems and interior at Benoa, and sea trials from the harbour. Good project management makes these moves invisible to the owner.

Plan your build around the right geography

Where a boat is built on the island shapes its budget and calendar as much as what is built. Talk through your project with the Bali Yacht Builder desk — WhatsApp +62 811-2859-0000 or [email protected] — and we will map the locations to your hull, schedule and budget in USD.
