Building for the Future: Sustainability & Community Impact

As a builder of yachts designed to explore the 17,500 islands of the Indonesian archipelago, home to 76% of the world’s coral species, we at Bali Yacht Builder have a profound responsibility to be stewards of the environment. Sustainability is not an afterthought; it is a core principle that guides our material sourcing, construction methods, and corporate philosophy. This unique marine biodiversity, the very heart of the Coral Triangle, faces unprecedented threats, making our role not just as builders, but as active guardians, more critical than ever. Our commitment is to create vessels that not only tread lightly on the oceans but also create lasting positive impact for the people of Indonesia. This commitment is managed by our entire team and is a key part of our building methodology.

Environmental Commitments

1. Certified Sustainable Timber Sourcing

Wood is the soul of our Phinisi yachts. We are uncompromising in our commitment to using only legally and sustainably harvested timber. Every piece of teak, ulin (ironwood), and other hardwood used in our shipyard is sourced from suppliers who are fully compliant with Indonesia’s Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu (SVLK). This national Timber Legality Assurance System, overseen by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and made mandatory for all wood exports since 2013, provides a stark contrast to the unregulated logging practices of the past. It ensures a rigorous chain of custody, verifying that wood is harvested from government-approved concessions in areas like Central Kalimantan. The use of dense, resinous ulin for the hull, for instance, ensures a vessel lifespan exceeding 50 years with proper maintenance, a core tenet of sustainability. We make our SVLK certificates and sourcing documents available for client audit.

2. Advanced Eco-Friendly Technologies

We empower our clients to minimize their environmental footprint by integrating cutting-edge green technologies into our builds. Options include hybrid-electric propulsion systems that can reduce diesel consumption by over 25% and advanced onboard wastewater treatment plants that process all black and grey water to meet stringent MARPOL standards, making it safe for discharge even in sensitive marine parks.

  • Hybrid Propulsion: We offer state-of-the-art hybrid-electric propulsion systems, allowing for silent, zero-emission operation in sensitive marine areas like the coral gardens of Raja Ampat or when observing marine life, ensuring wildlife is undisturbed by engine noise or fumes.
  • Wastewater Treatment: All our vessels are fitted with advanced wastewater treatment systems using top-tier Marine Sanitation Devices (MSDs). These exceed the requirements of the MARPOL convention, ensuring all black and grey water is treated to a high standard before being discharged.
  • Solar Integration: We design our superstructures to maximize the integration of high-efficiency solar panels, reducing generator runtime by up to 40% at anchor. This significantly cuts fuel consumption and noise pollution when enjoying a tranquil anchorage.
  • Elimination of Single-Use Plastics: We build our yachts with integrated water purification and bottling systems, eliminating the need for single-use plastic water bottles onboard—a major source of pollution in the archipelago.

3. Non-Toxic Materials & Sustainable Finishes

Our commitment to a healthy marine environment extends to the very materials we use. All paints, sealants, and antifouling coatings used below the waterline are chosen for their low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) properties and minimal environmental impact, complying with the latest international standards. Inside, we prioritize natural oils and water-based finishes over harsh chemical lacquers, ensuring superior air quality for guests and crew while preventing harmful runoff during maintenance cycles.

4. Shipyard Waste Management & Carbon Offsetting

Our responsibility begins at home in our shipyard. We have implemented a comprehensive waste management program that diverts over 75% of our metal, wood, and plastic waste from landfills. Furthermore, we partner with a verified carbon offset program to calculate the carbon footprint of each build and invest in Indonesian reforestation projects. This includes the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve, a 64,500-hectare peat swamp in Borneo that protects one of the last wild orangutan populations, ensuring each vessel is carbon neutral at delivery.

Community Commitments

1. Local Employment & Skills Preservation

We are deeply committed to the economic empowerment of our local community. Over 90% of our workforce is hired from Bali and other parts of Indonesia. More importantly, we run a formal three-year apprenticeship program dedicated to preserving the art of Phinisi boat-building, which was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017. Young apprentices work alongside our master shipwrights, like Pak Daeng Arifin, learning the ancient techniques. Apprentices learn not just woodworking, but the near-lost art of traditional joinery using wooden dowels, and the specific rigging techniques for the Phinisi’s seven-sail configuration. Many of our masters, including Pak Daeng, hail from the boat-building heartlands of Ara and Bira in South Sulawesi, bringing generations of ancestral knowledge to our modern Bali shipyard and ensuring this incredible craft is passed down.

2. Supporting Local Economies

Beyond direct employment, we prioritize sourcing materials and services from local businesses, directing over 70% of our supply chain spending to Bali-based enterprises. This creates a positive economic ripple effect that extends beyond our shipyard gates, from sourcing hand-woven ‘ikat’ textiles for interiors from villages like Tenganan, just 55 kilometers away, to procuring fresh produce for crew catering from local Balinese farms.

3. Marine Conservation Partnerships

We believe in giving back to the marine environment that sustains our industry. Bali Yacht Builder is a proud corporate partner of the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) in Sanur, contributing 1% of our annual net profit to their work. These funds have directly supported the planting of over 500 coral fragments in the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area through their ‘Adopt a Coral’ initiatives. We also provide in-kind support by making our vessels available for marine research expeditions during their off-season.

Our vision is a future where luxury and sustainability are not mutually exclusive but are inextricably linked, aligning with the principles of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. We invite our clients to join us on this journey, building yachts that are not only a source of immense pleasure but also a force for positive change, with a goal for our delivered vessels to be 100% single-use-plastic-free by 2025.
