Epoxy fairing and the yacht-standard finish
Between structure and paint lies the discipline that visually defines a yacht: fairing. Indonesian yards have deep fairing talent — patient longboard work is a labour skill, and labour is this country’s advantage — but the standard must be specified: epoxy fairing compounds over prepared laminate, guide-coated and sanded through the grits, with high-build primer and final finish measured in microns of orange peel, not adjectives. Tooling and moulds: the ownership question nobody asks early
Composite construction runs through tooling — the plugs and moulds the hull and deck are laminated in — and who pays for and owns that tooling is a contract question with long consequences. For a one-off build, tooling can be a third of hull cost; owners funding it should own it, in writing, including the right to destroy it so no unauthorised sisterships appear. For semi-custom builds on a yard’s existing moulds, the arithmetic reverses: you are buying amortised tooling, which is exactly where the value lies, but you should confirm the mould’s age and maintenance because tired tooling prints its defects into every hull.
