A custom built phinisi off Komodo

Five ways to end up with a yacht

Build custom in Bali, buy pre-owned, commission an international yard, charter instead, or manage it yourself. Each is right for someone.

The honest comparison starts with time

A pre-owned boat puts you on the water this season. A custom build puts you on the water in the boat you actually wanted.

Everything else follows from that trade: customisation against speed to sail, depreciation against specification, and who carries the risk when something is wrong.

We build, so we are not neutral. What we can do is state each route accurately, including the ones that end with you not commissioning anything from us.

Five routes

What each one actually costs you

Not in money alone. In time, control and who carries the risk.

A custom built phinisi

Custom build in Bali

Most control

The boat is drawn around you. Ten to thirty months, and the specification is contractual.

A pre-owned vessel alongside

Buy pre-owned

Fastest to water

On the water this season, at someone else's compromises. Survey first, always.

An internationally built yacht

International shipyard

Highest cost

Deep precision engineering, at European labour rates and a delivery voyage away.

A charter vessel in service

Charter instead

No ownership

If you sail four weeks a year, ownership is the expensive way to do it. We will say so.

Manage it yourself

Highest risk

Contracting a village yard direct can work. It fails on specification and supervision, not on craft.

Before you decide

Talk it through before you commit

Tell us how much you will actually use the boat, and where. If building is the wrong route for that, you will hear it in the first conversation.
